Urban Farming Day #2

Feeling those winter blues? Studies have shown that putting plants in a room can not only brighten the room, but also the mood of the people in it! Today’s Urban Farming ideas focus on the idea that you can have a little bit of farming in a very small space.

The first idea are Postcardens. They are what they sound like - post cards that can we turned in to a little desk garden. Each card will start to grow in a few days and last for a few weeks. This company based in London, but they are available in the US from this store.
You can even grow a little village of three townhouses with gardens!

For my birthday two years ago my cousin actually got me a similar card. On the bottom of the front of the card there was a strip, about one inch by 4 or 5 inches, that could be removed from the card and planted in a strip of dirt, treated as seeds, to bloom in a few days.

Using that same technology of seed paper, the company Bloomin has come up with a seed paper calendar. Each month when you take the page off, just plant it and soon it will be blooming in your garden!
It is such a unique card that everyone will enjoy. I know I loved getting mine from my cousin!

Looking for a simpler but beautiful floral greeting card? Cathy Kelly Photography has a series of floral cards to help beat your winter blues!

The next project is even smaller you can probably hold 3 of them in the palm of your hand. It’s called the Merry Project and puts tiny gardens in a plastic bottle cap. The Merry Farming Kits come with a compressed piece of soil and the seeds. You can use any bottle cap like a 20 oz Coca-Cola bottle. They only cost $2 per kit, but it’s a great way to use those old bottle caps, and the proceeds to go a greak japanese charity. I’m not sure if these are available in the U.S. but Coca-Cola has taken to the project in Japan, so hopefully it will become available here soon! But keep in mind, the concept is simple - easy to recreate here if you have a few spare bottle caps lying around.

So even if you don’t have much room, there are so many ways to have a small garden and brighten your day, every day.
