Stand Up to Cancer

Today is World Cancer Day. Stand Up To Cancer produced this video to tell you to "stand up and do something"

There are so many things you can do, such as know your family history, get checked, stop smoking, etc. Visit this website to see what people are doing today, to help in the global fight against cancer.

What am I doing today for world cancer day?

I'm donating to a great charity set up by my little sister in Alpha Phi and her friends who recently lost a friend to hypercalcemic small cell ovarian carcinoma. They have done an amazing job staying strong for Katie, each other, and Katie's legacy. They continue to organize events such as the Katie Oppo Memorial Walk and Katie Oppo Memorial Concert. Needless to say, I am extremely proud of my little and all the work she has put in to help raise awareness and fight this disease.  You can donate at teamkatieoppo.org !

Here are some of the amazing people who organized the Katie Oppo Memorial Walk this summer in their "Team Katie" Shirts.

Scientific research is incredibly important, but it is also important to monitor what we are putting in our own bodies. A few things to do:
- add cancer fighting foods to your diet
- eat less red meat

What are cancer fighting foods?
Leafy Greens: Spinach, Kale, Collards have lots of cancer fighting benefits.
Broccoli: Broccoli has chemicals which can stop tumors from forming and reduce hormore related cancers. Broccoli is particularly strong against breast cancer.
Tomatoes: Tomatoes have caretenoid lycopene which protects cells from the cancer-causing oxygen damage. Tomatoes are particularly strong against prostate, breast, and pancreatic cancers.
Berries: The antioxidants in berries counteract the effects of free-radical damage

Here's a quick tomato sauce. Make it over whole wheat pasta with broccoli and spinach leaves and you have a delicious cancer fighting/preventing meal! (The tomato sauce recipe is from Whole Living Magazine's Power Foods cookbook)

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 red onion
8 garlic cloves, minced
2 cans, diced tomatoes in juice
1/4 cup plus 2 tbsp dry red wine
1 teaspoon dried oregano, crumbled
1 teaspoon dried basil, crumbled

1. In a medium saucepan, heat oil over medium. Add onion and garlic; cook, stirring frequently until softened, about 7 minutes
2. Stir in the tomatoes and their juice, wine, oregano, basil, and 1/4 tsp salt. Simmer until lightly thickened, 8-10 minutes. Season with 1/2 tsp salt, or to taste. Serve immediately or let cool completely before storing.
